What are the benefits of sandalwood?

A classic scent, sandalwood is believed to have been used in perfumes for over 2,000 years. The oil comes from the roots or wood of the Santalum album (otherwise known as the East Indian Sandalwood tree). This ancient oil is known to have many health and wellbeing benefits and has been used in both Indian and Chinese medicine for many years.


Here are just some of well-publicised benefits of sandalwood:


  • For health: popular in India’s Ayurvedic medicine, sandalwood is used to treat everything from common colds to muscle aches, emotional wellbeing and haemorrhoids!

  • To promote calm: it is also linked to spirituality and is often used as a meditation aid.

  • Aids relaxation and restoration: sandalwood is frequently used in aromatherapy as a massage oil to assist with wellbeing and relaxation. It is also believed to have a restorative effect for those suffering from anxiety.

  • Helps with healing: some studies have shown that sandalwood oil can help wound healing and can prevent against infection.

  • Protects against skin ageing due to the high content of antioxidants.

  • It is also thought to boost mental alertness when applied directly to the skin as an oil, according to various studies.

What type of sandalwood should you look for?


Look out for the purest form of sandalwood oil you can find. Beware of many oils which are mixed with synthetic products or alcohol as the quality of the oil will have been significantly reduced.


What does it smell like?

As it’s typically cultivated from older trees (in fact, the older the tree, the better quality the oil), it boasts a deep woody scent. It is often described as a being a perfect balance of floral tones combined with a heavier woody aroma. It is a classic scent which really does promote a feeling of wellbeing and relaxation.


Can you benefit from sandalwood properties if its in candle form?
