Once you’ve invested in a gorgeous WICK’D candle it’s sometimes tempting not to burn it all to preserve it… But there are ways in which you can burn it so that you extend its shelf-life and keep it smelling amazing for longer.
Never burn it for short periods – always allow your candle to burn for a few hours when you first purchase it. This allows an even burn of the top layer of wax, which helps the next time you light it. The optimum burn time is 4 hours.
Trim the wicks – basically the longer the wick, the more the candle burns. It’s recommended that you trim it every time you use the candle. This will help to avoid the vessel becoming black and smoky. Wicks should be a centimetre long.
Put the wick back in the centre after each burn. Do this when the wax is still in liquid form.
Keep it away from a breeze – putting it in a draughty spot means it will burn faster and use more energy.
Make sure it’s completely cool before you light it again – this should take about 2 hours.
Put the lid back on when you’re not using it. This will help to preserve the fragrance and stop it getting dusty.
Clean the glass – if it’s black and sooty then use a damp cloth or cotton wool pad to clean the residue. This will help to keep your candle smelling fresher.
Don’t put your candle out in sunlight for long periods – direct sunlight for extended period can compromise the structural integrity of the wax leading to an inefficient and wonky burn.
Freeze it! One theory suggests putting your candle in the freezer for a couple of hours before lighting it will make the wax harder, and therefore burn slower.
